WIL's commitment to going green started last year with their Green Works Series. The trio of forums — Ontario Women in Business Luncheon, Ontario Aboriginal Forum and Green Works Conference — brought together women, industry and business leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and youth and students in the green economy to network, learn and share the latest environmental trends and government initiatives that fuel the emerging green economy. To continue on this green path, WIL is participating in Earth Run in just a few short weeks. Founded by WIL's Program Director David Mossman, the Earth Run Foundation is about bringing people together to build a sustainable future. By engaging the private and public sector, the foundation raises awareness and funding for local environmental organizations such as WWF Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation. Unique to the Earth Run are some of the following qualities: all runs are green with a minimal environmental footprint and follows strict Fit Planet guidelines including the elimination of extra waste a typical race produces, such as runners bibs, mailing paper registration forms and other paper products; and participants are able to self-direct 100% of the funds they raise to the Earth Run partner organization of their choice. Earth Run epitomizes only the basics so that the bare minimum impacts our precious planet. Step out for a green day and run for your planet. Join WIL's team by running, walking, biking or strolling with them in the Vancouver (Jericho Beach Park) or Toronto (Exhibition Place and Downsview Park) chapter of Earth Run on April 25. Other locations throughout BC include Kelowna (Waterfront Park), Kamloops (Riverside Park) and Nelson (Lakeside Park). More info and register now. While Earth Run's one-day event is a great avenue to create awareness of building green communities and a sustainable future, it's also important to think about how you can lead a greener life on an ongoing basis. Contrary to what some may believe, going green doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, it saves you money. Here are some of many practical ways for you to go green:
While all these ideas are nothing new, the impact of first-timers practicing them is. Whether you are a veteran or rookie on green practices, WIL would like to encourage everyone to do their part to help the planet. It's never too late to start, and it's easy! Your contribution, large or small, will make a positive impact and future generations will thank you for it.
