Lillian Currie, Emerging Leaders Placement Project
What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?
I was motivated to become a volunteer because I wanted to be part of a program that makes meaningful change while pushing me beyond my comfort zone. I’ve always wanted to make a positive difference in people’s lives and develop the skills to inspire and lead, and the Emerging Leaders Placement Project provided a unique opportunity to grow personally while contributing to initiatives that truly matter, which was truly an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?
The most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer is seeing the direct impact of my efforts on others and the community, whether it's helping someone achieve a goal, supporting a program, or contributing to a project that benefits many people. Just knowing that my time and energy make a difference is incredibly fulfilling.
Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?
One major lesson I learned is the importance of active listening and empathy. Understanding the perspective and needs of others has made me a more effective leader and teammate. Even small gestures, such as clarifying questions or acknowledging someone's experience, can make a significant difference in how people feel valued and supported.
How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?
I always try to prioritize balance by managing my time, setting realistic goals, and taking breaks when needed. Activities like exercising, dancing, and spending time with friends and family help me to recharge.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
My advice to anyone considering volunteering would be to go for it if it feels right. Don’t let concerns about what others think hold you back; experiences like this are worth pursuing. Volunteering is also about personal growth. Be patient, stay curious, and accept any opportunity you come across to gain new skills and meet new people.
Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
