Tianne Nan, Emerging Leaders Placement Program

What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?

I simply want to do something purposeful with my life, and nothing brings me greater joy than making a difference in my community! When I came across this opportunity, it really resonated with me, as it offered a way to help strengthen the community I care deeply about. It’s truly fulfilling to remind yourself at the end of the day that you’ve done something good for the community, and that sense of purpose often becomes the motivation that keeps you going.

What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?

The most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer is knowing that my time and efforts are going to make an impact on someone's life, even in small ways! Throughout my volunteering at a non-profit summer camp to support families living in poverty, it is extremely fulfilling to see the impact that you can make to kids, making their summers brighter. Volunteering isn’t about recognition for me, but about showing up, and offering what you can to make someone’s day a little brighter.

Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?

Volunteering has taught me that the smallest acts of kindness can create a meaningful difference in someone else’s life. But beyond that, this journey has also brought light to aspects of myself that I hadn’t fully recognized before. I learned that being in a position to help is a privilege. It allows you to support others while providing you a deep sense of fulfillment, by constantly reminding you that your actions hold purpose. Volunteering was one of the true activities where I felt a genuine sense of fulfillment.

How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?

You can’t pour from an empty cup, you always have to take care of yourself first. I’ve learned the hard way to find healthy boundaries, where I can focus on myself so I can fully dedicate my efforts to my goals. Whether this is taking walks in nature, blasting music and singing along, or journaling, taking breaks is essential, and I now understand that I shouldn’t feel guilty about it at all!

What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

Go for it! Take it one step at a time, you don’t have to have high expectations of yourself and what you have to achieve, everyone starts somewhere! Volunteering is as much about growing as it is about helping others, you do not have to be perfect. Every small action will make a difference! Believe in yourself, and you will inspire others to believe in themselves too!

Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
