Emerging Leaders Placement Project Power 5 Interview

Updated: Jan 16

Joann Blessen, Emerging Leaders Placement Program

What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?

Honestly, I wanted to stop being lazy and actually do something that mattered. This project felt like a way to step into real leadership instead of just talking about it. I also wanted experience that actually means something, not just something to say or write on my resume, but something that actually pushes me to grow and puts me into new situations. Something that takes me out of my comfort zone.

What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?

It’s when you realize your impact isn’t something that is just on paper, it’s real. Seeing people actually benefit from what you’re doing is different. Plus, you meet people who genuinely care about the same things you do, and that just makes you want to keep doing it more.

Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?

One BIG thing I’ve learned is that leadership isn’t about being the person that is always seen,  it’s about being the person who actually shows up and follows through. Another lesson is that you don’t need to be “perfect” to make a difference. Half of volunteering is just being willing to try, learn, and adapt. Plus, also bringing a smile onto someone's face just makes you happier about the work that you're doing.

How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?

I’ve learned the hard way that setting boundaries is non-negotiable. If I’m completely drained, I can’t show up for anyone, including myself. Now, I make sure to balance my schedule, take breaks, and actually let myself rest without feeling guilty. Checking in with myself mentally and emotionally has become a part of my daily routine, keeping me grounded and preventing burnout before it even starts.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

Just go for it. You don’t need to have everything figured out; volunteering is literally how you learn. Start small, be open to new experiences, and don’t be scared to step out of your comfort zone. You might surprise yourself with how much you grow.

Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
