Celebrating Women’s Progress in Leadership and Participation at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games marked a historic step forward for women in sports. Female participation reached an all-time high, with women making up 49.2% of Olympic athletes and 44.7% of Paralympic athletes. Mixed-gender events and nearly balanced medal opportunities reflected a continued commitment to creating equitable competition and highlighting the talents of women athletes on a global stage.

Beyond participation, women are making meaningful strides in leadership. The International Olympic Committee now has 46.7% female representation on its Executive Board, including two female vice presidents. Leadership roles across National Olympic Committees, International Federations, and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic governance are also seeing increases in female representation, showing the importance of intentional support for women in decision-making positions.

Media coverage of female athletes is improving, with more visibility than ever before. High-profile stars like swimmer Katie Ledecky and gymnast Simone Biles captured global attention, setting records and inspiring millions. Paralympic athletes are also gaining recognition, reflecting the growing visibility of women in all areas of sport. These stories demonstrate how representation, visibility, and leadership can inspire future generations.

At the Women in Leadership Foundation, this report serves as a reminder that progress is possible when inclusion, mentorship, and visibility are prioritized. Sports offer lessons that extend beyond the field: with intentional support, women can thrive as leaders, role models, and changemakers across all sectors of society.

By celebrating these achievements and recognizing the work that still lies ahead, we can continue to empower women to reach their full potential in every area of leadership and participation.
