Emerging Leaders Placement Project Power 5 Interview

Upasna Parikh, Emerging Leaders Placement Program

What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?

I was inspired to volunteer by my desire to give back to the community, connect with new people, and learn new skills valuable for both my professional and personal life. I also wanted to challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone, share my unique perspective, and deepen my understanding of leadership.

What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?

The most rewarding aspect for me is seeing the impact, both big and small, that my efforts can have on others. Contributing positively to society is incredibly important to me, and I find it meaningful to collaborate with others to help create change. Volunteering also gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?

One of the most meaningful lessons I’ve learned through volunteering is that no task is ever menial. It can sometimes seem like the people in leadership roles are contributing the most, but the truth is that every person doing their part matters. I’ve come to understand that even the smallest act of service has real value when it’s done with compassion, selflessness, and care.

How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?

I balance my goals and leadership roles by breaking tasks down, staying organized, and not letting myself get overwhelmed. Leadership can feel heavy at times, so I’ve learned that taking care of myself is essential. I stay grounded by working out and journaling to de-stress.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

Go for it. You will always learn something valuable and feel good knowing you’ve contributed. Volunteering helps you build skills like time management, organization, and communication, and you often pick up new technical skills. For me, volunteering has helped me discover what I enjoy, what I don’t, and even uncover strengths.

Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
