Avani Clair, Emerging Leaders Placement Program
What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?
My desire to make an impact on those around me was what mainly motivated me to join the Emerging Leaders Placement Project. I want to make a meaningful difference in the world, and I feel like joining this amazing project is a great step towards reaching that goal.
What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a volunteer is seeing the difference I make in the lives of others. I always feel fulfilled after I volunteer because it makes me feel like I actually made a real impact on something greater than myself, which is deeply rewarding.
Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?
There have been many valuable lessons and experiences I gained throughout my volunteer journey, the primary one being that lending your time to a good cause is definitely worth it. Before, I used to think that volunteering was just a waste of time and something that I only needed for post-secondary, but over the past year, I have learnt that it’s so much more than that. It allows you to reach your goals, try new things, connect with your community, and it leaves you extremely fulfilled afterwards. This lesson resonated with me deeply, as volunteering is now one of my favourite things to do in my free time.
How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?
When pursuing my goals and leadership roles, I take care of my wellbeing by moving my body and staying active. I do this by playing sports, going for runs, walking around the park, or going to the gym with friends. I take care of my mental wellbeing by doing hobbies I enjoy and letting myself be creative, as well as doing mindfulness practices like journaling.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
I would advise anyone trying to become a volunteer to just try anything they find interesting, even if they don’t think they can do it. It’s so fulfilling and gives you so much great experience when you try something new! New volunteers should just believe in themselves and not worry about making mistakes, because there are so many people around to help you out, and they’ve all been in your shoes before.
Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
