Polina Kharlashina, Emerging Leaders Placement Project
What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?
I wanted to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project because I am passionate about helping others and developing my leadership skills. I really enjoy meeting new people and improving my communication, and volunteering gives me the chance to do both. I am also motivated by the opportunity to work towards my goals, and I believe that the leadership skills I have gained through volunteering will help me achieve them. Most importantly, I love supporting others in their journey, whether it’s by guiding them, offering advice, or simply giving attention to someone who needs it. Knowing that my actions can make a real difference inspires me to contribute as much as I can.
What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?
The most rewarding aspect of volunteering is seeing how my help can truly matter to someone else. It feels wonderful to know that the time and attention I give to a person can help them find the right path, gain confidence, or feel motivated. Even small efforts, like answering a question or guiding someone through a task, can have a big impact, and realizing that my support is valuable gives me a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Knowing that I can positively influence someone’s growth and learning is both fulfilling and inspiring.
Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?
My explore and experience on the volunteering has taught me a lot about patience, empathy and how to listen. I learned that being able to empathize with someone’s challenges and giving them the support they need in a mindful, calm manner makes all the difference. Another important insight is that small acts of guidance or encouragement can do wonders in a person’s path. These three lessons had a profound impact not only on me as a volunteer but also helped me become a better person in general by improving the way I dealt with people and challenges.
How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?
To take care of my well-being while pursuing my goals, I make sure to balance my school, volunteering, and personal time. I stay organized, set priorities, and take short breaks to recharge my energy. I’ve learned that looking after my mental and physical health helps me perform better and stay motivated in all areas of my life.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
My advice for someone considering volunteering is to be open-minded, patient, and proactive. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and always try to give your best effort. Even small contributions can have a big impact, and volunteering is a great way to grow personally while helping others.
Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
