Ava Bates, Emerging Leaders Placement Project
What motivated you to become a volunteer in the Emerging Leaders Placement Project?
I have always enjoyed helping people in any way I can, especially those in my community, and joining this committee is another way I hope to contribute. I know how competitive and overwhelming schools and workplaces can be. I want to help people learn about themselves and the impact they can have on the world through career and volunteer opportunities.
What do you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer?
I believe the most rewarding part of being a volunteer is seeing the impact your actions can have on others’ lives. There is no better feeling than knowing something you did made someone else’s day better. Providing someone with one successful opportunity could lead to many more successes in their life.
Have there been any valuable lessons or insights you've gained through your volunteer journey? If so, could you share one or two that have had a significant impact on you?
I have learned many lessons from my other volunteer opportunities about how much an act of kindness makes an impact. Even if someone may not know, or may not say how much your help means to them, it makes a difference. When someone does notice it solidifies in me that I can change the lives of others. I have also learned that working with a team is one of the best ways to accomplish goals. Many perspectives and ideas allow for better decision making and creates bigger impacts.
How do you take care of your well-being while pursuing your goals or leadership roles?
I take care of my well-being by building strong connections with my peers. Making good friends and being close to family is very important to me. I remind myself that I always have people around me to support me if I ever need help. When it gets hard, I also remember to remind myself why I chose to do this and how it will help many other people.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
I would tell someone that it will be hard work but if you want to make a difference in other people’s lives and network with amazing people it is always worth it. I would recommend building a strong group of people to support you if you need it and to always be proud of your passions and accomplishments.
Thank you so much for volunteering and making a positive difference, we greatly appreciate your dedication and valuable contributions.
